It was a busy and productive weekend for the varsity track & field Owls who competed in the Houston Classic on Friday and Saturday. Against a strong field of 31 teams, MUS finished 6th overall, highlighted by a school-record performance and several top finishes.
Friday Highlights
The weekend got off to a fast start in the Distance Medley Relay, where the team of junior Walt Gilliland, freshman Fort Gusmus IV, freshman Noah Hinote, and sophomore Kade McCracken placed 2nd while breaking the MUS school record by four seconds with a time of 10:54.64.
The previous record of 10:58.10 had stood since 1994, set by Chris Carr, Trey Carr, Brian Kelley, and Willie Mays.
Saturday Highlights
Momentum carried into Saturday as senior McEwen Taylor Jr. delivered a standout performance in the Pole Vault, winning the event and breaking the meet record with a vault of 15'8".
In the Discus, seniors Gavin Gatere and Charles Doughtie placed 7th and 8th, respectively.
The Owls also saw strong performances on the track in the 100m Dash, where Taylor Jr. and Gatere finished 6th and 7th.
Closing out the meet, Gusmus turned in a big effort in the 400m, placing 8th with a personal-record time of 50.48.
Looking Ahead
The Owls return home for their final two meets of the regular season, scheduled for this Tuesday and next Tuesday. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they continue to build momentum and chase more record-breaking performances.
