The Owls (1-4) opened play at the Gulf Coast Classic on Monday, falling 9-6 to University School of Jackson in Orange Beach, Alabama.
USJ scored in each of the first two innings to take an early lead, using a pair of walks to bring home the game's first run before adding two more in the second on a double and an error.
The Owls responded offensively throughout the game, collecting six hits and keeping pressure on the Bruins' pitching staff. Juniors Doug Suddarth and Foster Flaherty each recorded two hits to lead the MUS lineup, while Flaherty drove in two runs with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Suddarth also started on the mound for the Owls, striking out eight batters over four innings of work while allowing four runs, three earned.
Defensively, MUS turned a double play and continued to battle throughout the contest.
The Owls remain in Orange Beach for day two of the Gulf Coast Classic on Tuesday, where they will face Lebanon High School at 11:30 a.m. and Wilson Central at 2:00 p.m.
