The varsity baseball Owls (3-7) competed in a doubleheader on Friday at the USA Classic in Millington, finishing the day with a win over Routt Catholic and a hard-fought loss to Father McGivney Catholic.
Game 1 — vs. Routt Catholic (14-5)
The Owls opened the day with a dominant 14-5 win over Routt Catholic. Junior Foster Flaherty led the offense with three hits in five at-bats, including a triple in the seventh, a double in the second, and a single in the third. Flaherty drove in three runs, while junior Doug Suddarth also drove in three and added multiple hits, including two doubles.
MUS scored 10 runs in the third inning, highlighted by Suddarth, Flaherty, sophomore Haynes Kiser, senior Reid McKnett, and junior Matthew Ray all contributing to the big frame. The Owls struck first in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by junior James Loeffler. Defensively, MUS turned one double play and remained solid throughout the contest.
On the mound, Suddarth got the win, struck out five, and pitched a complete game.
Game 2 — vs. Father McGivney Catholic (8-6)
In the nightcap, the Owls fell 8-6 to Father McGivney Catholic in a tightly contested game. MUS got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the first inning on a double by Flaherty. Flaherty drove in three runs on the day, while Suddarth led the team with three hits in four at-bats.
Senior Gray Nevels had a standout defensive game, recording 10 chances without an error and throwing out a runner at second base. The team continued to showcase solid fielding despite the loss.
The Owls will return to action this afternoon against Collierville at 1:00 P.M. on Field 5 to wrap up the USA Classic.
