The varsity baseball Owls (4-8) closed out the USA Classic on a high note with a 6-4 comeback victory over the Collierville Dragons on Saturday. Senior Foster Flaherty drove in four runs on two hits, including a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning that proved decisive.
Collierville scored first in the opening frame, but MUS responded in the third inning when junior Matthew Ray's groundout helped tie the game at 1-1. The Dragons regained the lead later in the third on a solo home run.Â
The Owls rallied in the seventh inning, highlighted by Flaherty's grand slam, putting MUS ahead for good. Senior Reid McKnett had a big day at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats, while junior Doug Suddarth added two hits. MUS finished the game with nine hits and did not commit a single error in the field. Senior Gray Nevels anchored the defense, handling a team-high seven chances and throwing out three runners on the day.
On the mound, freshman Walker Brown earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Junior Andrew Lester contributed 2.1Â innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit.
The Owls will return to action on Tuesday night, hosting Greater Praise Christian Academy Wildcats at 7:00 P.M.
