The varsity basketball Owls used a stifling defense to thwart a good offensive MHEA squad and win in its annual contest at the FedEx Forum, 46-25, to improve to 11-5 on the year.
The Eagles scored the first basket of the game off the tip, but they got only 9 more field goals the rest of the contest as the Owls hit 5 three-pointers, all behind the NBA three-point line, to win handily.
Eight MUS players scored, led by senior
Ehi Ataga's 9 points. Seniors
Kendon Leakes and
Montgomery Griffin added 7 points each, and senior
Bo Echols had 6 points but also added 14 rebounds.
The Owls led at the end of the first period, 11-6, after a
John Painter layup, and then in the second quarter, MHEA (9-12) scored only 2 points as three-pointers from senior
Miller Griesbeck and Leakes broke open the game. The Owls would go on to lead by as much as 25 points late in the third quarter, and everyone was able to play on the Grizzlies home floor.
The Owls are now off for a week before opening up division play with a contest at St. Benedict next Friday.
