The varsity basketball Owls overcame a talented, well-coached MHEA team to make Senior Night a success as the Owls won, 58-40, to improve to 15-7, 1-2 overall.
After having honored their eight seniors —
Ehi Ataga,
Bo Echols,
James Graham,
Miller Griesbeck,
Montgomery Griffin,
Kendon Leakes,
Liam McCarver, and
Glover Patton — the Owls jumped out to an early 10-point lead at 14-4 following a basket by sophomore
Levi Johnson. But then the Eagles started chipping away at the lead as they hit several timely three-point baskets to take a lead with 3:55 left in the half. They held that advantage for most of the final 3:55 and led at the break, 29-26.
That lead actually grew to 6 after an opening three-pointer, but from there, the MUS defense became very stingy, and MHEA (13-19) scored only 8 points the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, the Owls played inside-out and started taking control. A
Levi Johnson three-pointer on a set play at the end of quarter three gave MUS a 41-35 lead.
That lead grew in the fourth quarter, and everyone got ample action as the Owls took their final non-divisional game of the year.
Johnson and Ataga led MUS in scoring with 15 points, and Ataga added 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Echols added 11 points and 12 rebounds for another double-double. Eight Owls scored to help the cause.
