Moving their region opener up one day because of forecasted inclement weather, the varsity basketball Owls led early but ultimately fell to Briarcrest, 58-48, to fall to 12-6, 0-1 in the division.
The Owls led by as many as 7 points in the first quarter as they were deliberate and found openings against the Briarcrest denying man-to-man defense. Senior
Bo Echols had 6 points to lead MUS as the team held the first-quarter advantage, 13-11.
But from there, the Saints (20-3, 2-0) attacked inside with their two posts, and they started to gain control as they got several layups and made 5 free throws in the second quarter to get a 6-point lead at the half at 29-23.
In the second half, a
Montgomery Griffin 3-point basket to start the half closed the gap to 3 points, but that was as close as the Owls could get as Briarcrest increased their defensive pressure and continued to attack the basket offensively. A late Owl run closed the advantage to 10, but they ran out of time.
Senior
Kendon Leakes led the team in scoring with 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting. He also added 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Griffin ended with 9 points on 3 of 3 shooting from 3-point range, and Echols had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Briarcrest shot 51.1% from the field (23-45) and forced 14 turnovers to take the region win.
