Led by double-doubles from seniors
Ehi Ataga and
Bo Echols, the varsity basketball Owls won their first true road contest of the season, besting Millington Central, 73-64.
Echols scored 22 points on 7-for-8 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Ataga added 17 points and 10 rebounds, including 7 offensive boards, as the Owls dominated the smaller Trojans inside. The Owls (6-2) outrebounded Millington, 33-23, as they shot 58% from the floor.
The contest was close early as MUS held only a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, and Millington (2-4) took the lead on a three-pointer early in the second quarter. But that lead would be their last as the Owls ended the half on a 14-7 run to build a 6-point halftime advantage at 31-25.
Millington did close the gap to 2 points on two occasions in the third quarter, but the Owls quickly regained control, mainly through their inside play. The lead grew to 12 early in the fourth quarter on a layup by
Miller Griesbeck, who finished with 10 points, and the Owls cruised from there to their sixth win on the year.
MUS had 5 players finish in double figures in scoring. In addition to Echols, Ataga, and Griesbeck, senior
Kendon Leakes added 12 points and 4 assists, and sophomore
Levi Johnson chipped in 10 points.
