The varsity football Owls opened their home schedule in dominant fashion last Friday night, rolling past the Kirby Cougars, 49–16, behind a balanced offensive attack. Sophomore quarterback
Price Renovich had the best game of his career, throwing three touchdowns and adding one long scoring run.
Renovich connected twice with junior TE
Foster Flaherty for scores. The first opened the scoring as the pass went for 24 yards. The PAT was missed as the Owls had a 6-0 lead with 6:43 left in the half. The second was in quarter three as Renovich threw a beautiful ball down the seam to Flaherty for the 40-yard touchdown. Mixed between was a 43-yard second-quarter strike to
Gavin Gatere, the senior's second touchdown reception of the 2025 season. And Renovich added a 51-yard scramble as he evaded Cougars and rumbled into the endzone with 3:43 left in the half. The Owls led at the break, 21-8.
In the second half, the Owls tried to wear the talented Kirby defenders by running the football, and the Owls found success. The offense got rolling following a special-teams play as
Caleb Loudenbeck blocked a Kirby punt early in the third quarter, giving the Owls possession in Cougar territory. From there, the hosts needed only three plays to score, the scoring play being Flaherty's second touchdown reception. That score, which increased the lead to 28-8, seemed to deflate the Cougars, and the Owls took advantage on the ground. MUS scored on its final three possessions. Senior RB
Jackson Hood scored from 10 yards out on the next drive, and then
Tommie Reed added a 14-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 42- 16. And
Gray Gowen capped off the scoring with an 8-yard run that culminated a 6-play, 42-yard drive.
Kirby had talent on both sides of the football and did score two touchdowns, one each half. Quarterback Malcolm Jack hit Tilyon Wilks for a 9-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to cut into the deficit to 14-8 after the two-point conversion. Later, Jack connected with Christian Jeffe on a 21-yard score in the fourth quarter, rounding out the Cougars' scoring.
Defensively, Hood,
Reid McKnett, and
Austin Spence led the Owls in tackles with 6. McKnett also added a sack, the first of the year for the defensive line, and a quarterback hurry, and
Dylan Taylor added a tackle-for-loss.
With the win, the Owls improve to 3-0, and Kirby drops to 1-2.
Great Win!
