In the 65th meeting of Tennessee's oldest high school football rivalry, the CBHS Purple Wave took control in the second half to defeat MUS, 42–14, at Tom Nix Stadium. The result tightened the all-time series to 33–29–3 in favor of the Owls and marked the second straight win for CBHS in the rivalry.
MUS (6–3, 1–3) took the opening kickoff and put together a dominant drive, mainly moving the ball on the ground.
Tommie Reed,
Gavin Gatere, and
Maddox Giel all posted big runs, and Giel added a 23-yard pass to Gatere as the Owls ultimately moved down to the CBHS 3-yard line. But facing 3
rd and goal, Reed could not control the handoff on a run, and Sebastian Renderos took advantage for the hosts, returning the fumble 97 yards for the score to give CBHS (4-5, 1-3) the 7-0 lead with 8:13 left in the first quarter.
But the Owls were not deterred as they took the ensuing kickoff and again started driving, all on the ground. Finally, on the 10
th play of the possession, Giel raced around the left side for the touchdown, tying the score after
Joshua Wittber's PAT. The drive -- which consisted of all runs, none of which were longer than 10 yards – consumed 5:31 to get the Owls on the scoreboard.
The momentum for the Owls continued as on the second play of CBHS's first drive,
Sam Galler forced a fumble, and
Caleb Loudenbeck recovered to get the Owls the ball back at the MUS 38. But during this stretch, MUS suffered two crucial injuries to two leaders, LB
Jackson Hood and Giel, and those injuries were difficult for the team to overcome emotionally. But they kept playing hard for their teammates. Sophomore QB
Price Renovich came on to replace Giel and led a big drive. Picking up two long 3
rd downs on scrambles, Renovich gave the team a spark, and then Gatere and Reed again imposed their wills to get close. Reed ultimately capped the 17-play, 8:13 drive with a 4-yard run for the score to give the Owls a 14–7 lead with 5:47 left in the half.
But from there, CBHS took control, gashing the MUS defense with big plays. Despite running more plays, 61 to 33, and holding the ball for more than 30 minutes, the Owls could not get enough stops, and Purple Wave big plays swung the game. After the Owls' second touchdown, CBHS answered with a 49-yard scoring run by Will J. Mason and a 69-yard touchdown pass from Nate Brick to Javon Slaton in quick succession to seize a 21–14 halftime advantage. Mason finished with 178 yards on just 14 carries and three touchdowns – including runs of 49, 11, and 44 yards – while Brick completed 10 of 12 passes for 179 yards and two scores.
The Purple Wave scored twice in the 3
rd quarter and once more in the fourth to end all threats by the Owls. Two Mason runs and a Brick-to-Trey Burse touchdown pass ended the scoring for the Brothers.
Defensively, MUS was led by
Sam Galler with 6 tackles, and
Caleb Loudenbeck added 5 and a fumble recovery. DL
Devin Wells recorded two tackles for loss and the team's lone sack.
Tanner Sherman added an interception, returning it four yards. However, the physical ground game from the Purple Wave was too much for the Owls.
